"Search for Meaning", Ceramic, steel copper pipe, one motor, 6 ft. tall, 1997

A copper pipe, which has been mounted in the middle of the construction, contains the requiem text of the German composer Johannes Brahms, written in spiral form on the pipe:

"Teach me that I must have an end, and that my life has a goal, and that I must leave! How dreadfully poor are all people, they are never at rest, they collect and know not why."

A motor turns the pipe in a slow circular motion so that the text can be read in a meditative fashion. On the top plate rests a modeled sculptural form just like the base, also made of ceramic and is glazed with the color tone of the copper pipe. Associations with head, heart and phallus therefore result.
